Keeping You Protected

We want you to have peace of mind even when the unexpected happens, which is why Uber partners with four leading insurance companies to protect every rideshare trip on the Uber app throughout the United States. By teaming up with Allstate, Farmers, James River, and Progressive, we are continuing our commitment to ensuring driver-partners and riders have a sense of security.

Based on your state, effective March 1, 2019, the insurance that Uber maintains on behalf of driver-partners operating on the Uber app may have changed to a different insurance carrier. Please refer to the map below to see which carrier insures driver-partners operating on the Uber app in your state if you drive under the Transportation Network Company model using your personal vehicle.

Every Uber driver-partner is insured while on the Uber app; from the moment a driver taps “Go” to wait for a trip request, while driving to pick up a rider, and until the trip ends. Riders are also protected during an Uber trip. Below is a detailed outline of the standard insurance coverage:

Once a driver-partner has accepted a trip on the Uber app, Uber maintains the following insurance on their behalf for a covered accident:

  • Third-party liability coverage
This Insures bodily injuries or damages a driver-partner has caused to riders, people in other vehicles, pedestrians, or property. Coverage limits vary by state but are at least $1,000,000.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage
This insures driver-partners and riders if an accident occurs on a passenger trip and another driver is at fault and doesn’t have sufficient insurance. Additionally, this insures hit and runs where the at-fault driver cannot be identified. Coverage limits vary by state but are at least $250,000.
  • Contingent comprehensive and collision coverage
As long as a driver-partner maintains comprehensive and collision coverage on his/her personal auto insurance, the insurance that Uber maintains will kick in and provide physical damage coverage for the driver-partner’s car up to its actual cash value, regardless of who is at fault. There is a $1,000 deductible that the driver-partner must pay first before this coverage applies.

A low deductible

When a covered accident occurs causing damage to your vehicle, you are responsible for a $1,000 comprehensive and collision deductible. This is typically lower than Lyft’s comprehensive and collision deductible, which can be as high as $2,500 while driving your own car.*

This means that you would pay less out of pocket if your car is damaged while driving with us.

The information above applies to drivers that operate under the Transportation Network Company model using their personal vehicles.  Uber also partners with drivers that are commercially licensed and insured for limousine, livery, black car or private hire and does not apply to those trips including all vehicles licensed by the New York City TLC.  Coverage for vehicle damage and liability arising from those rides are covered by the commercial automobile insurance.
*Information about Lyft’s contingent comprehensive and collision coverage deductible is from Lyft’s website as of February 21, 2019,  and the deductibles described may be lower in certain circumstances, such as for vehicles rented through Lyft’s Express Drive program. Coverage and deductibles may also vary by location.
