Personal and Social Responsibilities

In winter 2019, I participated in the Orientation welcoming program as a campus tour guide. At that day, all new students were divided into 3 groups. To them feel more inclusive, we tour guides were assigned with students who share the similar backgrounds with us. For me, most of my fellows were coming from CBE or China, several even in the same major with me.

I hadn't been a tour guide before, so at first, I decided to just focus on the highlights marked in the roadmap. I introduced to them the kambri, the music concert building and ovals... However, soon, I found they are very curious not so much about the landscapes as the student experiences inANU.

They asked me loads of questions about the library services, which restaurant to recommend, the types of career workshops, writing or spoken English assistances... and even questions like which courses would be considered difficult by the majority. In other words, they paid more attention to their upcoming university life.

That's when I realised that, as a student who had enjoyed the various premium ANU free services, like resume reviewing assistance or mental health workshop for a long time, I could and should help my fellow students to know about these. Our university endeavours to provide us with classic experiences, and we could really gain a lot from it. Also, I don't need to have any expertise for this, all I need to do is giving info or advices based on my past experiences.

That's why I decided to become a mentor in the Set4ANU and thrilled to do some good for my schoolmates. That experience was memorable, I think I really provided help for my mentees, some of which I have developed precious long-term friendship with.
