Model catalysts [1] allowed imaging of nanoparticles from multiple orientations, without having to tilt the sample, and to detect subtle changes in surface structure. This allowed us to determine how oxidation-reduction treatments could roughen up metal surfaces [2], leading to dramatic enhancements in catalytic activity. Our lab provided the first direct images of amorphous overlayers formed by high temperature reduction supporting the models for SMSI on TiO2-supported catalysts [3].
